SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
Quick strikes were the Pirates' calling card last season, as they led the nation with 23 scoring drives (20 touchdowns) that took one minute or less off the clock. They closed out 2007 by scoring 30 or more points in six of their last seven C-USA contests.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
The Pirates' porous pass defense ranked 114th nationally last year, allowing 289 yards per game through the air and 26 passing touchdowns. They return six players in the secondary with starting experience, led by safety Van Eskridge (104 tackles), so there's no excuse for a repeat performance in 2008.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I was pleased with the focus, intensity and enthusiasm during camp. The depth is starting to come around at the linebacker and wide receiver positions, and the growth was good throughout. We have a long way to go, but I'm encouraged." -- East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz.
